On the night of August 25th, 2001, Aaliyah, just 22 years old and at height of her fame, boards a Cessna 402B in the Bahamas, where the recording actress and budding film star had just finished shooting a video for her latest single, “Rock the Boat.” Despite warnings from the ground crew and even the pilot, she and her retinue of eight others take off for the States in a plane too light to carry all of their quipment. It crashes just 200 feet beyond the runway’s end, killing everyone on board.
